Steve Colabufo

Former Water Resource Manager with Suffolk County Water Authority

Abstract: Aquifer Management is the practice of determining how pumping wells affect, and are affected by, the groundwater in their vicinity. Sometimes referred to as Wellhead protection, source water assessment, or groundwater oversight, the science of aquifer management has evolved over the years to incorporate many innovative tools and techniques. These include the development and use of groundwater flow models, GIS databases, and historical land use records.

In this presentation, we will review the evolution of source water delineation techniques, and describe how Long Island’s water suppliers and regulatory agencies have used Aquifer Management to address numerous water quality and quantity issues.
